Frequently Asked Questions

How do I adopt a dog?

1. Find a dog or puppy you like on our website. If you don't see the dog on the website it is not ready yet. Please wait until it is posted on Facebook or the website. We will not answer questions about animals who are not individually posted.

2. Go to our website fill out the Adoption Application. This is an interest application and allows us to collect basic information.

3. Please be patient while we do a vet check, if you have, or have had, pets.

4. If your pets are fully vaccinated, on heartworm prevention and spayed or neutered, you will receive a text message asking you to send a video of your backyard. We are specifically interested in fencing, gates, security for a dog.

5. Wait to receive a text with the Foster to set up a meet and greet. Meet and greets are mandatory, and they are held in the foster’s home.

6. Once you have met the dog and I feel it is a good fit for your family and you have fallen in love, the foster will then have you sign an Adoption Agreement and you will pay the adoption donation.

7. You will receive a folder with all of your dogs vet records. You will also be provided with information about the food the dog is eating and any other relevant information.

What are your adoption donations?

Our minimum adoption donations is $350, with some exceptions.

AjK Family Rescue will discuss the amount specific to your selected dog during your application review. AjK Family Rescue is a registered non-profit. All adoption donations help us continue our mission to rescue dogs from kill shelters and help us pay our vet and other bills.

All adoption donations are non refundable.

Why is the minimum adoption donation $350?

AjK Family Rescue is a non-profit, and all adoption donations help us continue our mission to rescue dogs from kill shelters and help us pay our vet and other bills. We have no paid staff, and do not receive any government assistance.

While some dogs may pass through the rescue quickly with minimal expenses, even the least expensive puppy receives vaccinations and vet services that the rescue pays for. It is not uncommon for some pups to incur up to $1,000 or more in vet bills. We require the same adoption donation for all puppies, and do not raise it should the dog have higher than average bills.

How can I foster a dog?

Submit a Adoption Application, and we will be in touch! AjK Family Rescue provides most things to our fosters, including food & paying for vet bills. The foster family will be responsible for taking the dog to any vet appointments and organizing meet & greets with prospective owners.

What if I want to keep the dog that I foster?

As long as the dog has not been promised to another family, we would LOVE for you to be a “foster fail” and welcome your foster to your home forever. Our standard application process and adoption donations still apply.

Will I need to sign a contract to adopt?

Yes. Our adoption process requires an Adoption Agreement be signed prior to you picking up your new pet.

Where are you based? What if I live somewhere else?

We are based in Austin, Texas. We do not ship our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, you will need to travel to Austin and be responsible for all necessary health certificates, transportation, and their related costs.

Considering Adopting an AjK Family Rescue pup? Here are a few things to consider before filling out an application

1. Application must be filled out completely for it to process and go to the person who is doing application reviews. We do complete checks, including calling your vet to check if your past/current pets are fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered, on preventatives at the moment and throughout their lives.

*Please note:

AjK Family Rescue reserves the right to approve or deny an adoption application for any reason at any time during the process.

2. If you have an issue with the adoption donation/fee please do not continue to fill out the application.

Please note:

Our adoption donation is non-negotiable as we work solely through donations, and we incur vet bills for all our fosters. We do suggest checking with your local shelters as they are always full and have many dogs and puppies to choose from at lower adoption fees.

3. If you are located out of state, please consider the following before filling out our adoption application.

Please note:

AjK Family Rescue does adopt to out of state residents with extra fees to cover a vet visit and health certificates. Potential adopters must travel to Texas to adopt as AjK does not ship or transport dogs out of state. Adopter would be responsible for setting up a date and paying for transportation fees how they see fit however, AjK Family Rescue will not be held responsible for any issues that arise from transportation. Also, AjK does not hold puppies for an extended amount of time for an adopter unless a foster has an agreement with adopter at their discretion and adoption fee has been paid.

4. All adoption applications are kept for 4 months. If you did not find a pup by then, you must fill out a new application to be considered for adopting an AjK pup.

5. If you are still not sure about wanting a dog, please consider the following.

Please note:

As it states on the adoption contract, the adoption fee is non refundable no matter the reason for not keeping the pup. If it helps we can provide you with documentation for tax purposes. Please realize that all donations go straight to pay for vet bills that are due every day/week/month.
